Crimes of the Heart

Tupelo Community Theatre will present the Pulitzer Prize winning play Crimes of the Heart on April 15-17, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee at 2 p.m. on April 17th. Written by Jackson native Beth Henley and first staged at TCT in 1988, Crimes of the Heart is a family drama set in Mississippi that certainly withstands the test of time. It tells the story of the three Magrath sisters and deals with past resentments as the family is forced to deal with assorted relatives and relationships.

The Lyric may now seat at 50% capacity and masks are requited during performances. Tickets may be claimed by all patrons and season members beginning Monday, March 22nd and will go on sale to the public on April 5th. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and younger and the play contains a very limited amount of language that some patrons may find offensive.

Summer Intern

Tupelo Community Theatre is seeking college interns for summer.  Student’s working hours are flexible and they are exposed to all areas of theatre operations. Scholarships are provided at the end of each semester’s volunteer work. Auditions for Something Rotten

Tupelo Community Theatre will hold auditions for the musical Something Rotten, created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Sunday, March 21st 2:00 pm and Monday, March 22nd at 6:00 pm at the St. James Catholic Church Family Life Center on North Gloster in Tupelo.  This outrageous, crowd-pleasing farce was nominated for ten Tony awards and was lauded by audience members and critics alike.  Set in 1595, the story follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, who struggle to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the wild popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare.

> No advance preparation is needed and music and a short dance number will be taught at auditions. Additional night added for Auditions for Arsenic and Old Lace

Tupelo Community Theatre will hold auditions for the classic “Arsenic and Old Lace” on Thursday, March 4th at 6:00 PM in the rehearsal hall at the Lyric Theatre at 201 N. Broadway in Downtown Tupelo. This show is a farcical “dark” comedy about the Brewster family. Mortimer, a drama critic, must deal with his crazy, murderous family and local police in Brooklyn, New York. The director is looking for men who can play roles in the 40-60 year old range.  No advanced preparation is required. Tupelo Community Theatre will hold auditions for the classic “Arsenic and Old Lace” on Monday, December 7, 2020, and Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at 6:00 PM at the Lyric Theatre at 201 N. Broadway in Downtown Tupelo. This show is a farcical “dark” comedy about the Brewster family. Mortimer, a drama critic, must deal with his crazy, murderous family and local police in Brooklyn, New York. The cast is composed of 1 female aged 21-35; 2 females aged 55+; and 11 males aged 25+. No advanced preparation is required. Production dates are January 28, 29 and 30, 2021 with rehearsals beginning in mid-December. Auditions for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

Tupelo Community Theatre will hold auditions for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang as soon as possible. This winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play deals with middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia, who  share their deceased parents’ home in Bucks County, PA.  The two bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives when their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness worries the imperious Masha.  The siblings (1 man and 2 women) should be able to play characters between 40 and 65 years of age.  Cassandra can be any age.  Spike’s character is in his 20’s or 30’s and must feel comfortable on stage in a speedo swim suit.  Nina’s character is in her 20’s or 30’s as well.  Lynn Nelson will direct. Tupelo Community Theatre will hold auditions for Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at 2:00 PM and Monday, December 16, 2019, at 6:00 PM in the rehearsal hall at the Lyric Theatre at 201 N Broadway in Downtown Tupelo. This show is a raucous farce about a dysfunctional theatre troupe at the Erlander Theatre in Buffalo, New York, in 1953. The troupe winds its way through a tangle of confusion to produce a misbegotten mixture of two plays at the same time. The show is filled with laughter and slapstick comedy. The cast is composed of 4 females: 2 – ages 20-30; 1 – age 45-55; and 1 – age 70+ and 4 males: 2 – ages 20-30 and 2 ages 45-55. Some of the male roles involve quite a bit of physicality and staged combat. No advanced preparation is required.
