summer youth theatre
Vaudeville

TCT has sponsored its Summer Youth Theatre for more than thirty years. Beginning with Li'l Abner, in 1973, literally hundreds of young people from ages seven through twenty-one have learned about theatre by doing. For most of them, this is a chance to be part of a production, to gain the confidence that comes from auditioning in front of others, and to learn to appreciate the dramatic arts. For a few, it has been the beginning of a career -- in theatre, in broadcast journalism, in music or in communications. For all, it has been a chance to have fun on stage!
We take our role in fostering an appreciation for theatre seriously, and we've been fortunate to have had many adult volunteers take the time to work with these young people, Off To See The Wizardand teach them the fundamentals of stagecraft, set design, costume and makeup. In addition to these adult volunteers, TCT has welcomed the chance to give college students majoring in drama the opportunity to share their knowledge and passion for the theatre arts by directing our summer programs. We've also been pleased to have both college and high school students serve as choreographers, music directors, set and lighting designers and stage managers. Providing these leadership roles to young people ensures our theatre of leadership for the future: both in the community and at TCT.

Pied Piper Playhouse and Tupelo Community Theatre are partnering to produce the Stephen Swartz musical My Son Pinocchio for 2010 Summer Youth.

The classic tale of an aging toymaker and his puppet, Pinocchio, takes on timely issues in Disney’s My Son Pinocchio. Grammy Award-winner and master melodist Stephen Schwartz (who also wrote the hit Godspell) adds a compelling score of original songs to the beloved classics “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings.” Join the Blue Fairy, Stromboli and a lively cast of characters as Geppetto journeys beyond the Toy Shop to discover what makes the “perfect child.” Jimmy Grisham, director of last year’s Music Man, Jr., will be directing.

Production dates for My Son Pinocchio will be July 22-24 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and younger.

On July 23 at 2 p.m. there will be a preview performance for summer programs and day care centers.  Tickets for the preview are $3 each and you must call to reserve seats.

For more info or to reserve seats call the TCT office 844-1935.
